Is Marketing My College Major?

Postby eoforwic » Tue Jul 03, 2012 4:01 pm

I'll be a senior in less than a month, and when it comes to what I want to be when I grow up, I still have no clue. It's a little embarrassing because when people find out I have one more year of school, they inevitably ask "What do you want to major in when you get to college?" and I ALWAYS say "I'm not sure", which is when they consequently ask "Well, what do you really like to do?" and I say "I'm not sure" like an idiot. -__-'

So to answer that pesky "major" question, I took 2 quizzes online and they both said that I'd be good in the marketing field. Except there's one small problem: I know absolutely NOTHING about marketing! I've never even had a business class in high school...
I've been trying to read up on marketing as a major, but there's so many different fields of marketing that I don't know where to start. I'm not even too sure I want to go into marketing. I'm only interested because I know it's one of the few kinds of jobs that'll be in high demand 10 years from now.

SO BACK TO MY QUESTION: IS MARKETING RIGHT FOR ME? Here's some details about me:

1) I'm pretty creative.
2) I LOVE English and writing. I wanted to be an author, but they (mainly the men in my family) say that it's not a "real job"
3) I'm not too good at meeting new people, but I'm great at being social, friendly, and cooperative.
4) I don't consider myself to be leader material
5) I'm a problem solver.
6) I enjoy research and finding out how things work
7) I'd very much prefer being my own boss. However, I don't mind working under someone.
8) I thought I'd enjoy studying law, but after I found out how consumed in their work lawyers are and brutal the competition for attorneys can be, I changed my mind.

That's about all I can think of. So um... help?

Your mature, clear, straight-forward answers are appreciated :)

To answer your question, yes, it could be the right major for you, but honey don't stress over this too much just yet. The truth of the matter is that you're only going to be a High School Senior. Yes, that does mean that college is just around the corner, but what many people fail to tell High School Seniors is that you can in fact go into college with an Undeclared Major. You can even remain an Undeclared Major until the middle of your College Sophomore Year! This means that you actually have 2.5 years (including High School Senior Year) to research major, jobs with those majors, how much schooling you'd need to obtain a particular job, and the income of those jobs, long before you have to settle on one. Another truth that is often withheld from you is the fact that it might really be best to be an Undeclared Major, and just focus on finishing up your General Education Core Curriculum during the first 1.5 years of college and getting a taste of what you like before you jump into too many classes in a particular field, only to realize you don't like it after all. Many students that go in with a Declared Major wind up changing it 3-4 times over. If you go in Undeclared, you can possibly save yourself the trouble!

Now, according to your interests and the results of Career Tests that you have taken, Marketing just might suit you, but you really should have some more information on that major and possible jobs or careers relating to that major. Let me give you some links just to get you started. Again, you have plenty of time to gather information on others as well. A great way to get information on many majors is to go to a college website, look at the Undergraduate Catalog, and then look at Majors and Minors, and look at the specific classes within a particular major.
