Is part of what is wrong with America so many people in useless careers?

We have so many unproductive people making entire careers out of useless things the market is somehow demanding. While the law of supply and demand are important, the consumers are only part to blame. Media shoves off worthless values on people. Would a man retire after 23 years of selling farts to pet rock owners? Why can't we have more people making steel, cars, mining for ore, innovating electronics, and manufacturing usable goods and services?
Driving truck, I could not believe how much booze and cigarettes I hauled out of the US. What would our deficit be like if we could not get Mexico drunk and China/Japan hooked on nicotine? I can't even keep up with all the paperwork on the silly marketing programs.
I long for the day when you could just go buy something and be done with it. How many people are employed in keeping up with all this stupid marketing data? People are going to spend the same amount no matter how much marketing there is because the bottleneck is the amount of money they have, not the amount of convincing to buy they see. Yet all this marketing adds to the cost of production and robs the private sector of useful employment.

It takes stupid innovations to lead to profitable sales. Just think, at one time people thought the personal computer was a stupid idea.

The documentary "Century of the Self" explains these things better than anything else I have ever read or viewed. It is rather long at 3+ hours, but it is riveting for those that have an interest in such things. I haven't looked at the world the same since watching it.

It illustrates how we went from a nation that produced and consumed "needs" to a nation that produced and consumed "wants."

You have nothing to stand on. Jobs come from a need and someone to pay for that and someone to do that job. Nobody pays for farts. I suspect your ignorance of many jobs has you running off needlessly.

How can you imply an affinity for a character from "Atlas Shrugged" while disparaging the very market that redeemed "Henry Reardon" in the book?
