What would I need to do to keep my idea for "X product" safe from being stolen without necessarily having to get an expensive patent. I want to be safe when presenting my idea to them so they won't just take my idea and ditch me from any part in the development and profits. Is it best to talk to them in person?

If you come up with an idea related to the R and D the group has been working on, especially if you've been using the company's equipment and supplies, you had better keep it to yourself. The inventor of Post-Its was working for Three M at the time. I think he got a bonus. I suggest you get a patent attorney for the last word on this.

Getting a patent. Of the company really liked your idea there's a chance thru would take it.
