My boss fired me over not turning over my personal email account, is that right?

Postby ailwyn » Sun Mar 04, 2012 6:46 pm

I've been with this company for over 8 months and been using my personal email account for work and there is no policy in writing that states that our emails will be monitored. They simply know that this is my personal email account and yet they say that it is now company property. This is ridiculous and there is no way that I'd give them my personal email account password (regardless if I used it for work - they should've thought to set me up an email acct for work purposes. I have had this email account for over 6 years and it contains personal info (orders, personal emails, etc.) and just the other day they were asking for my bank account number so that they can do a direct deposit (which never happened - they just gave me cash with my checkstub). Does this sound suspicious at all? And then a few weeks ago - they accused me of stealing $1,000.00 and tried to scare me to say that we were going to be doing a lie detector session, which I was all up for. Anyway it turns out that it was their child that stole the money and there was no apology that was given for that - which I really am not worrying about.

Is this right?

Absolutely not.

Your e-mail is not their property so they have no right to ask you for it.

Is it right, no. Is it legal, yes. Unfortunately managers can do pretty much what they want.

You never should have used the same account for both personal and business.

There is no easy answer on this one. You may not want to give them access to your peronsal info, but they have every right to access business communication. The fact that you use your account for both leaves you both at a disadvantage.

Sans a contract or a union, they can fire you for anything or nothing at all so long as they do not violate federal anti discrimination laws.

You may be able to collect unemployment

Your company's email system belongs to the company and, using it for non-business purposes, can get you fired. Regardless, it's obvious that your post is a hoax.
