I received a call from my daughter this evening. She said that she had been trying to squeeze into her normal parking spot in her apartment building, but the car next to her was parked too close. She then attempted to back out, but scraped the car next to her in trying to do so and there is a foot long scrape on both cars. The other car looks worse. How should I go about punishing her for this? She obviously tried to park in a too small spot, but she has been a good driver so far. She is 19 and has had her license since 16. She has never been in a car accident or gotten any traffic tickets, but she has received 3 parking tickets. I was thinking of taking her car and license away for a few months and having her pay for the damages. Is this a fair punishment? If not, how should I punish her?

I'm not sure you want to punish her.

She's 19 and hasn't been in an accident yet? That's incredible.

Accidents happen. She did something stupid. She knows that. I'm not sure what point punishing her would really serve in this situation.

It's not like she lied to you about it or skipped out on the responsibility.

You must have insurance. Maybe you make her pay the deductible. Nothing wrong with that.

Rachel, we all did our own accidents and scrapes. Just give her a break, take the car away for 3 - 5days and then give her a lecture about the safety of driving a car and how much you love her and don't want anything to happen to her. DON'T make her feel that this punishment is because you got angry that your car is scraped, she will start thinking that your car is far more important than her.

Control much man isnt the scrape on the car the conquence for.wat happened punishing her is stupid making her pay for it is obvois but punishment is stupid it wont teach her.anything ppl are.careful with cars for two reason 1. For there safety 2. For the cars well being she scraped the car the punishement is the scrape, cost for it and the emotions punishment is not needed and shes 19 let her grow

Why the hell are you going to try to punish her when shes an adult, SHES 19!!! let her pay for the damages, shes on her own, and Punish? WTF?! who does that to an ADULT?

You need to talk to a psychologist about your pathalogic need to punish her for what was clearly an accident.

Make her pay for the damage. That's fine.

But punish her? You have problems.

No punishment of any kind. This incident itself is learning for her.

Why do you think she should be punished? I would think she feels bad anouth anyway. Why do you think it’s her fault? It could be that the other car was parked badly in the first place. Maybe a little more understanding from you and some driving advice, (Well meant) Why not spend time with her teaching her, to improve her reverse driving. Most of us feel nervous when reversing, I do and I have been driving for 45 years,
Give her a break. You will only take her confidence away and that will not improve her driving
