I was looking up animal cruelty laws for my state. Here is what i found;
Alabama:
http://www.legislature.state.al.us/CodeofAlabama/1975/13A-11-14.htm
ALA. CODE Section 13A-11-14 (1977)

The act of cruelty to animals, particularly domesticated dogs and cats, is defined as: “Overloads, overdrives, deprives of necessary sustenance or shelter, unnecessarily or cruelly beats, injures, mutilates or causes the same to be done; intentionally tortures any dog or cat or skins a domestic dog or cat or offers for sale or exchange or offers to buy to exchange the fur, hide, or pelt of a domestic dog or cat.” Cruelty to a dog or cat is a Class A Misdemeanor, punishable with a fine of up to $1,000 and/or imprisonment up to 6 months. Intentionally torturing a dog or cat is a Class C Felony punishable with a fine of up to $5,000 and/or imprisonment up to 10 years. Person convicted could also be made to pay for the cost of care of the animal. Exceptions are made for research, protection of life or property, training, or shooting a dog or cat for urinating or defecating on property. Animals can also be seized by animal control officers.

Did i read this wrong, or does it say in exceptions are made part that ppl can kill an animal for using your lawn for a bathroom? I can not b/l this.:(

Wow. Where in Alabama are you? I'm in Mississippi and I dunno if we have that..I'm a little under an hour from Alabama, so we might. That's terrible. Hopefully, if anything, they don't mean a real gun..

*edit*
I just checked Mississippi's laws, and it says:

Any sheriff, constable, policeman, or agent of a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals may kill, or cause to be killed, any animal found neglected or abandoned, if in the opinion of three respectable citizens it be injured or diseased past recovery, or by age has become useless.

But you're right..everywhere I looked, it is ok to do so in Alabama. Note to self - never bring my dog over there :(

Harsh, but...

Neither dogs nor cats should be let roam, and personally, I don't want every dog in the neighbourhood peeing on my lawn. I wouldn't shoot your dog for that, but no one should allow a dog to relieve itself in another yard.

I think that law is a bit harsh, but I do understand how it got that way - the irresponsibility of owners, unfortunately.

THis is Crazzy.....I guess we need to be more carfel....I live in alabama..there is no leash law where i live and the dogs ofthe neighborhood are all loose including two of mine...they pretty much roam freely....They have for years and everyone is ok....but i guess we couldn't do anything if someone shot them!....and if you shot a dog ( i wouldn't dare) b/c it peed on your grass...how do you go about proving it peed?...People could just kill them for no reason and claim it peed!
