Hello,
I'm not sure that I'm writing in right forum, but maybe somebody will have some advise.
First of all I'm not US citizen, now I'm living in foreign country and it is my last year in university. Next year I suppose to get my masters degree in law. I'm interested after graduating to start working in US as a paralegal (or any similar job) and later get a law degree from US and start working as a lawyer.
I was reading that you don't need to have a degree from law if you want to work as a paralegal. I was really interested working in California, but also interested in places near Washington, D.C., New York city, Las Vegas, Miami. I found that there is generally no requirement in states for legal assistants or paralegals. California, however, is a major exception. Up until Business and professions code 6450 was signed into law by Governor Gray Davis in 2000, there was little, if any regulation of paralegals in the state. Thus, many people would prepare legal documents for the public (even though it is understood that paralegals are not supposed to provide services directly to the public) and call themselves paralegals. In addition to the flurry of lawsuits filed against these individuals, the paralegal profession began to be attacked. This caused the paralegal community to demand that the paralegal profession in California be regulated. Now persons wishing to become paralegals must complete a program approved by the ABA, complete a 24 semester unit paralegal program at an accredited institution or they can be grandfathered in under BPC 6450-56.
I also have 4 years of job experience in bankruptcy law, business law, financial law, family law, employment law. I was working in foreign country through a lawyer and also in bankruptcy business. I'm a chairman of board in international organization. If it is any help that foreign country is in Europe Union.
Is it possible for me to find any work as paralegal or any other similar work in US? Is it hard to find work? Where is a good place for me (foreigner) to look for a jobs? What is an average salary for starting and later? In which city which I mention above is best to start working (easy to find work, bigger salary, cheaper rent, good transportation etc.)? What is a possibility to start working as a lawyer, what kind of classes and exams I need to take?
