Puppy swallowed piece of a ballon, help!?

Postby yago » Sun May 06, 2012 6:36 am

My 11 week old Goldern retreiver puppy swallowed a peice of ballon. he loves to chew on everything and eats everything! He is well fed he is just a normal mischevious puppy. There was a peice of baloon and he ate it. Now 2 hours ago he is ok i guess. I gave him food and water right after he swallowed it and he pooped like 10 minutes later without complications but there was no balloon. Then he pooped about ab hour later but still no balloon. I know for a fact that this is not his firts balloon because he has had peices of balloon in his fecal matter twice before. But now that I actually caught him I am very concerned. Please is there a big risk, it's late so ER is out of question but tomorrow I could go. Please help. Also the balloon is around our property because of my brothers and their friend popping balloons everywhere.

He should be fine, it will pass eventually. Calm down, and if you are still that concerned about it in the morning, a trip to the vet won't hurt anything.

he will probably poop it out eventually. once my dog ate my moms underwear whole, just the whole thing. no one new until she pooped it out. it was gross, but it passed through her digestive system. and once i found this toad because it was making weird noises and it was pooping out a shoelace. i thing animals are starting a conspiracy to eat clothes. but in all seriousness if my dog could poop underwear and the small from could poop out a whole shoelace, then im pretty sure it will pass through.

It's not going to happen in 10 minutes or 2 hours, more like 12-24 hours. How big was the piece, if it was small it will probably pass with no problems. It it was a whole balloon I'd be more worried. Unless he seems to be having a problem going I wouldn't worry about it.

You might want to talk to your brother about the dangers of balloons with dogs, and encourage him and his friends to pick up the pieces.

Well, the risk with a small piece of balloon is bigger for choking than causing an obstruction. Besides, it takes at least 12 hours for food to go through a larger puppy like him. So as long as he's still eating and drinking normally, you probably should be ok. But you do need a solution to this. Your parents need to get those kids to pick up the balloons. The next time he might choke on a bigger one and by the time you find him it's too late.

I think it may take a while to show up and you may never see it as it will be well hidden in the feces. Ask your brother and his friends to please collect the pieces, as they pop them. Tomorrow ask your Vet about the risk and take your brother with you. They need to know that the pieces are attractive to many birds and domestic animals and wild animals. They seem to be passing but they can not be good for any animal.
