Quitting a job turns ugly & getting a future reference?

Postby wal49 » Sun Jun 24, 2012 11:01 pm

Ok, so I quit my job. Followed all necessary procedures: gave 2 weeks notice, didn't miss any time during my last weeks, still did everything I was assigned without causing a scene.

So my last day comes and they give me some paperwork to fill out. Why are you leaving, what can we improve on, etc. At the top of form it says I was suppose to be given a sealed envelope and to put it in the envelope when I'm done with it and be given to HR. My supervisor doesn't give me the envelope, only the paperwork.

So I fill it out and be honest with why I'm leaving and give it to my supervisor. So I'm on facebook and I see my supervisor going off about me calling me every name in the book. While my name isn't specifically mentioned its obvious its about me since I was the only one who quit recently.

My question is what are my options. Legally I probably don't/can't make a case for slander or defamation since my name isn't specially mentioned, but what about bringing it to HR's attention? At some point when I'm applying for jobs they're going to want to contact my last supervisor. Should I bring this unprofessional behavior to HR's attention (I do have screen shots, since they posted it under "public" settings).

Apparently you were very brutally honest in your exit interview to the point where your old boss was offended. Number one, this exit interview was intended for HR's eyes only and your supervisor read a confidential document she had no business reading.
I can see why you quit that job. Her rantings and ravings on Facebook shows how unprofessional she is. People who know you and care you you know not to believe the trash she wrote. Also, she knew very well that you would be reading her garbage. This was her way to strike back at you. She is stupid. How to get around her when it comes time to check your background: have another manager from that company write you a letter of recommendation.

In the future, know that exit interviews shouldn't be brutally honest. I was in HR for years, I learned to never write them when I left a company for the very reason you posted.

Why is your former boss a friend on Facebook? Delete or unfriend her. Call HR ant explain what's happenened. You shouldn't have given the paper back no in an envelope unles it was full of praise for the company and your boss.

Live and learn.
