My friend worked for a UK company for 4 yrs and was always picked up for work and taken to the meeting place where each team was allocated their daily jobs. He relocated and moved house to be within walking distance to the said meeting place so that it was easy to get to work if the driver was off. 2 years later the company sold up and transferred staff and contracts. Staff were informed that they either joined the new buyer as new employees or take statutory redundancy. It was not pleasant so they all signed contracts to keep themselves in employment. The TUPE Law was ignored by ball parties and they were bullied into signing new contracts. Previous contracts were verbal new ones are written. The new owner immediately reduced the wages, did not pay them for the 3 April Bank holidays in 2011 the new employer 'could not afford to pay all the men he had taken onboard'. Out of the blue later in the year he handed them a note predated by 3 weeks stating their hours were being cut for the winter. The letter gave them 4 weeks notice from the date on the document but wasn't handed to them until a week before the changes took effect. The contract states employees need to give a weeks notice when I leave however he has been offered a better job starting in 5 days time (next mon). The new contract our new employer gave them states they have to make their own way to the workplace, but he left one drivers with the company vans and my friend was picked up for the 12 months. Last week he was informed he has to make his own way to work aannd he has done for the last 2 days.
The question is what trouble can he get into if he hands in less than a weeks notice or did his employer already breach the contract with his own mistakes? Any help or advice greatly appreciated on behalf of a friend who needs an answer asap. Thanks
