Recommendations on GPS?

Postby ammi » Thu Oct 27, 2011 10:06 pm

I am looking to buy a GPS system for my in laws who are on the road a lot . (semi retired and haul trailers cross country). I need a recommendation on a GPS system suitable for them.

Would ideally like
a) 3.5" screen or larger.
b) Text to speech (turn left on elm st as opposed to turn left in .1 mile)
c) EASY interfaces. (old folks who are technology averse)
d) Live weather and traffic updates (question here do I need to subscribe to get this) ?
e) How accurate are these GPS in the back roads of oregon, idaho, az ?
f) POI a must - Gas stations. hotels campgrounds. restraunts.
g) under $300 - $350 (hey I m cheap and they are my inlaws)
h) other accessories not required (mp3, bluetooth etc etc)
i) auto reroute
j) make-them-lost-when-they-come-visiting-m… feature

I have narrowed my choice down to the following. Your recommendation/any other suggestion.
Garmin Street Pilot c340
TomTom ONE
Garmin nuvi 350 (or) 360 GPS
TomTom ONE XL GPS

Recommendations on GPS?

We have a Tom Tom and it works pretty well. It has sent us on some interesting non-direct routes, so I always cross check it with common sense. All GPS receivers are extremely accurate (provided they have a good signal) down to a few feet in most cases. The issues with "back roads" have more to do with the internal database of each particular device. The GPS will always "know" where it is in relation to other data points within the device I haven't gone off-roading with our Tom Tom so I am not sure if the back roads are on there. I would go to the retailer and ask for a demo.

out of those 4, I would say it is all a feature / operation issue.
any one of those are good.
