Salary Employee General Laws

Postby Foster » Thu Sep 25, 2014 5:56 am

I currently work for a company in Michigan,I am salary and the store mgr. The company seems to kind of make up the rules as they go but they dont provide any actual documentation saying before and after laws. An example would be the company says that as a Store Manager(my title) I am required to close up the store 2 nights a week! But I have looked all over to find a offical document thats says that I am required to do this as part of my job! Another example is at 4th qtr(Oct.-Dec.) I am required to work 6 days instead of 5 and work 54hrs instead of my usual 45hrs. are they actually allowed to force store managers to do this. I know being salaried I can work as many hours without being paid hourly but can they make me work these hours?

Salary Employee General Laws

Dear Patrick,

As per the law in your state, if you are an adult, the employer has the right to schedule however they feel they need you.  There is no minimum or maximum number of hours.  The employer may ask you to come in when needed, or send you home when work is slow and you are not needed.

Every employee when joins a new job is given a letter of job responsibilties(sometimes in verbal too). As a good practice your employer must have allowed you to close the store twice a week than all days in a week. Every company must follow the state labor lawss and cannot ignore it, therefore whatever rules are made in the Organisation must be made in complied with the Law whether in writing or verbal.

warm regards,

Umesh
