Should I step up and talk to my friend?

Postby taryn31 » Sun Nov 20, 2011 11:36 am

I have a friend that I used to hang out with, but we are not as close anymore. Her boys are both in a lot of trouble. Her oldest son (now 18) spent last night in jail, as the cops found him passed out drunk on the sidewalk in front of the house. This is the second time it's happened.

Her 14 year old son was just expelled for selling drugs. They've also walked in on him in bed with his buddy an two girls. They allow both boys to go anywhere with their friends, saying, "Well, we can't stop them!"

So the 14-year-old is sleeping in all day, smoking pot, and hanging out with friends while off school. Not much of a punishment.

The mom admits that she'll get a call someday that they found her oldest son dead. She says all she can do is focus on her career (getting her RN), and what happens with the boys happens. She drinks several times a week to deal with all this. She is severely diabetic (bs over 500 consistently).

Her husband is sick of the bs, and is cracking down on the boys (I guess better late than never). However, my friend said he's too hard on them, and if he doesn't quit she'll take the kids and leave. It makes me sick sitting by and watching this.

Now I heard she's throwing a b-day party for her youngest boy next week. I don't want to go. I also would love to sit her down and shake her...and talk some sense into her.

I forgot to mention that she's my boyfriend's daughter-in-law, so it may not be my place to say anything. My bf has tried to talk to his son when the kids were littler, but was told, "It's none of his business."
