Should the US adopt a point-based immigration system?

Postby regenweald » Tue Dec 20, 2011 3:20 pm

Like Europe and Australia. I'm talking about a points-based system which relies on a person's qualifications, talents, and employment potential. Right now, the US immigration system is really f***ed up because it mostly allows family-based immigration whereas it should allow more (and easily available) employment-based immigration. Even those people who apply for greencards (employment quota) generally receive it after 6-7 years and citizenship after 12 years, which is too long a time-period. Don't you think so? What if the educated and legal immigrants started departing US in order to secure greener pastures, considering current US economy and recent immigration laws?
People think that legal/illegal immigrant simply take away jobs but what about people who become entrepreneurs. Should the US still adopt a tough immigration policy for such people?
America's motto was food and work for everyone, and American dream is for all those who wish to work hard and succeed. If people don't want immigrants (considering the laws in Arizona and Alabama), what's the use of the American Dream at all?

If the US adopts they same system as the EU/UK. Then their whole immigration problem will expand exponentially.

Yes.
Not food and work for everyone, but opportunities for those able to contribute.

Should the US adopt a point-based immigration system?

like only letting the doctors and engineers in since we have shortages or real skilled labor and surpluses of business people, arts and debt movers?

I'd say the real skilled labor already gets a pass in. What we need to accept is tons of jobs like agriculture we must have labor for because no matter how bad things are -99% of americans will not ceaselessly and at high pace bend over pick strawberry in 100+ degree weather 10 hours a day for minimum wage. still enough other options for american workers and we need to stop demonizing the immigrants who don't mind cause we certainly won't replace them and they are not stealing anything away from us.

and labor shortages in those fields mean increased prices on all foods due to less harvest = hits everyone everywhere.

as far as immigration and jobs go - if you want foreigners to not be taking otherwise us jobs -ignore the crap no first worlder wants to do and instead push for rewards for companies who build plants in usa and penalties for those who decide to go with 9 yr old chinese kids. steep enough penalties so that .60 an hour labor isn't worth the 70% a hole tax bracket we put them in for f'in over their major consumer

Nope, we need to protect American jobs. There are no jobs that Americans can't do so we don't need foreigners right now.
