Utah Illegal Immigration laws question?

My long term boyfriend is an illegal immigrant in Utah, with a job. He's been here since he was seven years old and is more american than most natural born citizens i know.
we're trying to get him legal - how should we go about this? there's not really money for a lawyer, and we don't know much about the laws or fees or papers or consequences. marriage is kind of out of the question, and last weekend he got an alcohol citation- (my fault) him coming through the breathalyzer at only 0.028, though, being only 20 years old he now has court coming up for this. will this affect his chances of becoming legal?
just trying to figure things out...

He cannot get legal while here illegally. He messed up now he will have a record.
