What all is involved in an extensive background investigation?

Postby kendon19 » Thu Apr 14, 2011 12:07 am

Hey everyone.

I almost out of school and looking to join the US Marshals when I get my degree, I have been all over their website, researched them and such.

I am just curious about the background check they do. I don't have anything to hide...I can't even remember the last time I got a traffic ticket. But what do they check in the background investigation? Past places of employment and things like that?

Just thought I would ask! Thank you!

Interview of friends, family, neighbors, co-workers. Check with your employers. Credit history. Criminal history, and driving record. Military service. Ex-girlfriends / boyfriends, and their parents (!).

There are a number of levels to background searches/investigations, it depends on the level of security involved in your 'intended' job. Positive Vetting, begins with the verification of who you actually are - Parents/siblings background - Confirmation of your birth records/social security number/tax records/employment history/political affiliations/Police records/convictions etc. Your Education and associations with any know subversive or politically active anti-social groups/clubs/Sporting associations. Interviewing of named referees Who are your friends and their associations, the list just gets bigger as your level of security rises. Your best bet is to ask the Marshals Recruiters and most of all be absolutely honest and up front. Good luck with your application its a worthy and important role in Law Enforcement. Go for it. doc

I am a deputy US Marshal, my background took about 9 months. They checked my neighbors, my references, past employment including my military time. When filling out your application, make sure you put down everything, every traffic ticket and every accident. I forgot about one ticket I had gotten and it came up during the investigation.

Be honest about your answers first and foremost. I believe that DUSM are polygraphed for hiring, so that will come out in your responses. I applied and was called for an interview with the Uniformed Line Division of the Secret Service back in 1997, but another agency ended up hiring me first, so I went with it. The federal government does periodic re investigations every 5 years for law enforcement agents/officers/ and sensitive position personnel.
