What Are The Requirements To Get A Credit Card?

Postby marq » Wed Feb 04, 2015 7:14 am

I turned 18 about 9 months ago and never really thought about getting a credit card. But right now I would love the prospect of being able to buy things off the net, my bank account not really working with paypal a credit card is my only option. What does it take to have a credit card? Several people have told me that I don't need a job to have one, another that my bank would refuse me if I didn't have a job. As of right now I am not employed, I'm usually doing some odd-jobs here and there to get money but its nothing official. So could I ask for a credit card with my current status? I live in Canada, Quebec. Thanks for all answers.

What Are The Requirements To Get A Credit Card?

A year ago, if you lived in the US, all you would have had to do is wait until the offer came in the mail: "You have been preapproved!!" Now credit card companies are trying to get rid of people.(They may not look at it that way, but I plan to pay all of mine off just as soon as I win the lottery.) Here it has gone back to the old practice: "You can't get credit unless you have a good credit record, and you can't have a good credit record unless you already have credit."I don't know what the situation is in Canada, but my understanding is that credit has always been tighter there than in the US.

What Are The Requirements To Get A Credit Card?

Most credit cards won't accept you as an applicant without some type of steady work income. The reason for this is to ensure you have the funds to pay back the charges you put on your card. The other thing to think about is for your age, your limit will initially be pretty low until you build it up by paying on time, paying the minimum due, and keeping you account in good standing. Often your limit can start as low as a few hundred, up to maybe 2,000 at the most for someone around the age of 18. Again, they still want you to have some source of income, and ask on the application just how much you make. If you have good credit, which you probably do, just not much credit, then you might be able to get one without having a parent or relative cosign the application. Some ask for this under a certain age because they want to be sure if you can't pay, someone else can. I would be really careful about credit cards because without income, you won't be able to keep it long and it will go on your credit for years. Your bank account should work with paypal, I would ask customer service what the issue is. Hope this helps!

I believe you will need to have a good credit score in order to obtain a good credit card. Decide what limit you want to have for a credit card before applying for one. Once that is established, go will a reputable credit card company, my suggestion will be Capital One credit card. The limit might not be high at first but it helps building your credit score. Always pay at least the minimum or more when you make a purchase each month of the balance and always on time. Lastly, look at the terms and the interest rate of the credit card company that you're dealing with this is very important.
