You'd think this would be simple. I got a coat for Christmas from my boyfriend. The coat doesn't fit properly so I needed to exchange it for the next size down. I went to the store and tried to exchange it. Apparently more expensive coats like mine require manager approval, so the store manager came up to examine the coat. First he outright lied to me and said I had to have the original tags still on the coat. I asked where that was listed on their return policy, and pointed out that I had the tags (my boyfriend had taken them off). So he switched and started saying the coat was damaged. There was a couple hairs on the coat, and even me removing them wasn't acceptable.
I contacted the store's headquarters. I talked to several people who all said they had to accept the opinion of the store manager. I offered to bring the coat to their offices (they're not far away) because I knew any normal person would agree with me. They said they didn't do that sort of thing.
So now I'm stuck with a coat that doesn't fit at all. I posted on the store's Facebook, but they deleted my complaint. I also complained on Yelp and a couple other sites. But what can I actually do? Can I take a store to small claims court? Would it be worth my time over a hundred bucks?
