What can I do if someone else opens my UPS package?

Postby broehain61 » Fri Feb 24, 2012 10:05 pm

Here's the situation. My wife recently ordered some clothes online. We just moved into a new house and when the order was placed we forgot to update the shipping address on file and so our package was sent to the old address which now has new tenants. Luckily for us, my mother in law is the landlord and so we let her know that our package was sent to the old house and asked if she could pick it up from them. She was able to do so however the package had been opened and one of the items is missing, along with the packing slip. It's clear these people opened a package that wasn't addresses to them and stole one of the items. I realize we are at fault for providing the wrong address but that doesn't excuse them for opening something that isn't theirs. Not to mention that the items in the package were wrapped individually themselves and those were opened too. Clearly this was intentional. What are my options at this point?

Nothing is really "clearly" here.

As I'm not one to jump to conclusions - have you thought that maybe they were expecting a package and opened it by accident. And that the item missing was truly missing.

I get packages all the time and rarely look at the address. I expect a package, I get a package, I open the package. I don't check the address. And can't see it anyway if I don't have my glasses on.

It could be coincidence. Sounds like an online clothing store like Blair. They wrap all items separately.

I would have probably opened the items until I realized "this isn't what I ordered".

And it could be they didn't know the name of the package was related to their landlord. So why would they say anything.

What would you have done in their place? Once you've opened a package, realized it wasn't yours and didn't know who or where the people it was addressed to were? Be honest.

Many people shop at places like that. Many people get packages and open them without checking the address. I've had mail brought to me that has been opened by a neighbor. Who sits down with a letter opener and slits all the mail without checking the address. Perfectly normal.

What options are you looking for? You got your package after all. Something is missing. You have no proof they intentionally did anything. Could have been legitimately missing. Could be on back order and not shipped in the first place.

So call the company - they will replace the missing item.

Call it a coincidence. Call it a day.

Contact the company and tell them the items were missing and ask how to get a replacement.

You could also try to file charges for theft( mail fraud whatever) -but if you did not see them or they do not confess to doing it I don't really see that going anywhere and more hassle than it is worth! Plus if it was left on a doorstep or somewhere how do you really know they did it? I guess being connected to the landlord you could snoop when they are not home and find your items but that is illegal too! So why put yourself in that situation? Plus if you press charges could make it really hard on your mother in law to get her rent and not have her property vandalized! Headache!

Now your mother in law probably realizes she might have bad tenants in - hope she gets her rent!
