What does it mean to be a "Centrist Social Libertarian"?

Postby rickie » Wed Jul 18, 2012 2:02 am

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ ALL OF THIS, AT LEAST TAKE THE TIME TO READ THE TOP PORTION AS IT PERTAINS TO THE HEADLINE OF THIS QUESTION MORE THAN THE BOTTOM:

I wanted to see where I actually fell on the political spectrum in regards to the issues. I've always thought of myself more of a democrat than a republican, so I guess I've considered myself a "lib". I took 2 tests from 2 different sites, a total of 3 times over a period of 5 days to see if my results would be any different taking it a few times, and every time I've fallen in roughly the same spot.

So what do these, the latest results from the quiz I took, actually mean?:
You are a centrist social libertarian.
Left: 0.03, Libertarian: 4.71

If you average the 3 quizzes I took, I actually fall more to the right. I took the quiz on this website twice and got .03 to .06 left, but on the other one I got something like .5 right. So it's a very insignificant variation, but still, to my surprise, I fall more on the right, and even more to my surprise, I'm very centered.

And also, if you care to read this, I would like to know if my views are consistant with what my results actually mean. Without going into a lot of specific societal issues, I'll give a general overview of my views:

I believe the government is for the people, by the people, in that the government has a right to regulate some aspects of society, but should not impose laws that govern morality. I.e: I believe gays have a right to get married, women have a right to abortion, marijuana should be legal... but I also believe corporations are people and should be regulated if they do more harm to people than good.

I'm not a fan of war and big military spending and believe military spending is out of control. This isn't to say we should never go to war, but in most cases, peaceful solutions are a better option. Breaking international law, or going to a war for government interest is never OK.

I believe individual states can govern themselves better than 1 government can govern 50 individual states. It's how it used to be, and it makes sense. Seeing as every state has their own set of problems, own beliefs and own citizens, state governments can do a better job than 1 government imposing laws for all 310,000,000 citizens in every state.

I believe captilalism and corporatism have caused human beings, at least Americans, to lose site of what's important to life. It's a sad reflection on our society that something like water, so utterly neccessary to our existence, is packaged and branded for corportate profit. We work 40 hours a week, 50ish weeks a year for 40 years, and as the old system goes, we get 5 years between retirement and death; that's pretty sad.

Do I sound like a Libertarian?

I won't get into everything. That's just a basic overview of my opinions and beliefs. I don't really care about you're opinions, and if you try to shoot me down or tell me what an idiot I am, as with everything else on the Internet, I will disregard it and your opinion will go unheeded into the depths of the cess pool that is the Internet.

it means that you are mostly balanced between the left and the right, but you are strongly libertarian (as opposed to authoritarian)

sounds like my life story on yahoo. i took those tests for the same reason. i,m nominally a republican. the test told me i was a left wing libertarian. so much for tests, i think. my son calls me a blue dog democrat. i,m voting for romney as the lesser of two evils. what a sad commentary on american politics. you are probably more of a conservative democrat, as designations for political persuasion go in the u.s. in europe, we,d both be labeled as right wingers with union tendencies.

I think I saw that quiz and it was a crappy quiz. The premise of the quiz was that, in addition to right and left, that people tend to prefer less restrictive or more restrictive government. Then you take the quiz, and whether you are a righty or a lefty it proves that you like freedom. Then you compare yourself to other candidates and they tell you that Ron Paul is the only guy that likes freedom, so even if you are a leftist that you are probably closer to Paul on the chart than Obama or any real republican contender.

You skewed a little left on what you listed as political beliefs, but you are not clearly a democrat or a republican. Keep paying attention and you'll probably have solidified your views a little more by 2016. And pretty much all of us regular people 'like freedom', so watch out--the guy who is trying to 'protect your freedom' as a politician is, well-70% chance, lying to you.
