What exactly is NYC? A city-state?

Postby rushford79 » Wed Mar 14, 2012 10:17 pm

Is it a city-state, a second nation capital, an autonomous territory..?

The Mayor of NYC seems to be a very powerful figure and the Executive of this "International City"

NYC has its own anti-terrorism task forces, they have armed guards in swat gear and assault rifles patrolling the subways...

NYC is home to the UN building, the past/future WTC (world trade center), Wall Street (the stock exchange), foreign embassies....

The Mayor of NYC has authority over all of these things.... Michael Bloomberg has said it himself... "I have my own army in the NYPD, which is the seventh biggest army in the world....I have my own State Department...We have the United Nations in New York, and so we have an entree into the diplomatic world that Washington does not have." (MIT Speech)

The huffington post summed it up pretty well: "Bloomberg said he prefers City Hall to the White House, given that he is already a mini-president of his very own mini-country."

The only difference is that as a "lowly" mayor, he can run as "mini-president" as many times as he wants.

He even has ties to The New York Times.

If he is King of NYC, what does that make NYC?

You'd think he'd make the NYC Flag look cooler, like the UN flag or the flag of the OAS (Organization of American States).

At least he only wants to get paid $1 per year for being Mayor.... then again he is worth nearly $7 Billion....

If America is becoming dominated by the Executive Branch and Law Enforcement, then NYC is a perfect model to look at.

So, what exactly is NYC? Any opinions are welcome.

Well D.C. is what I would call a city-state, so I think NYC is just a REALLY powerful city and just has many powerful people. :D

It’s a city within the State of New York. I carries so much weight because there is a lot of business going on in NY. One of the most important cities in the US.

New York City is the largest city in terms of population in the USA and has been at least since the census of 1900. It is the main port of entry for cargo and for people, is the world's financial center, houses the United Nations (which has extraterritorial rights), and elects almost a majority of the members of the New York State legislature. Bloomberg is term limited, but with his money may buy a fourth term anyway. Given the attention jihadi lunatics accord NYC, don't you think a good sized security team is needed?

New York is a state, and the worlds 4th largest city is located in that state. But New York is one of the most vulnerable and targeted cities in the world. Simply for the reason of it's big population and home to many government officials. A terrorist attack in New York could devastate the whole nations economy. The United Nations, and New York stock exchange are located right on Manhattan Island.
And after 911 we realized the USA is a very targeted nation, especially New York.

As far as the flag goes, that flag has been around since 1778. Changing it would be an abomination. And also there is nothing wrong with taking pride in you're city. Mayor Bloomberg runs a city like no other in America, or even in the world. He is very important in the US government. He is in charge of protecting one of the worlds largest, and most targeted cities. If anything happened to New York, it could affect the nation. Even the world.

You could say New York is "like" a small country. It is different from the rest of the United States as far as food, people, and culture go. For example 60% don't own a car and walk, or take public transportation where ever they need to go This is unlike any other US city. In Los Angeles it's only 15%. Also New York cuisine is very unique.
