What is Legally blind?

Postby otis » Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:31 am

I have astigmatism, I've worn glasses as long as I can remember, I'm now 25, and vision in one eye is 20/350 and the other is 20/450 - does this mean without the aid of glasses I am legally blind? If persay as I grow older my vision worsens significantly and then becomes to a point where even with lenses don't help nearly as much.. does that contribute to legal blindess...??

You can't be legally blind WITHOUT glasses.

Legal blindness is measured as not being able to be corrected to better than 20/200 in the best eye WITH glasses ON

Unless you have a progressive eye disease, there is no reason you would ever get to a point glasses don't work for you.

Many people are way over 20/1000 without glasses but see 20/20 with them on. Uncorrected vision of 20/400 is very very common.

How poor the vision is without glasses is of no real importance as long as you can be corrected to 20/20 or close to it , all is fine.

I am not trying to give silly answers, but I heard being legally blind meant that the government has you down as blind.

EG: Person A & Person B are both completely blind. Person A is down on the government's list as 'blind
Person B is on the government's list but not down as blind.
Even though both people are blind, Person A is Legally Blind

Anyway, that's what I heard. Probably not true ;)
