I am puzzled at about your charge that free trade leads to more immigration. Job loses to factories overseas does not create jobs in the US, even if the executives who get wealthy from that decision hire a few more servants, at minimum wage, of course.

As far as cutting legal immigration, that is a two edged sword. Students who come to the US for studies sometimes find they cannot stay here, so they take their skills and learning home, where they compete against the US. And many very successful American companies have been founded by immigrants. So in some cases, the policy is the opposite of what would benefit the American economy.

The other side may be found on the farms in Alabama, where farmers simply cannot get Americans to do the hard work of picking crops. That is a result of a very harsh anti-immigrant bill passed by their legislature. Immigrants, both legal and 'illegal' left, to avoid harassment.

But consider this about taxes. An 'illegal' immigrant will pay taxes, especially Social Security taxes, but they will never collect. In 2009, the last year for which figures are available, employers reported wages of $72.8 billion for 7.7 million workers who could not be matched to legal Social Security numbers.

It seems many Republicans are content to carry water for corporations, who are more then happy to ship jobs overseas. Not exactly a conservative trait.

Nothing. The Tea Party is hopeless, too. I think that both have respectable goals. But, I believe that both groups have moved too far to the left.
