9 October 2011
Dear Essex County Health Department:
On October 8, 2011, I went o Essex County Correctional Center to see someone at Doremus Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by deadly amounts of mold and dust. I asked the person I was visiting why there was so much mold. He said that rain falls through the roof and it needs replaced. He also said they do not clean and want the residents to clean the floor for $1.50 a day. Inmates cannot clean the floor in the waiting room and hallways to the visitor's area because they may escape.
After my two hour visit, I went home with a really bad headache, cough, and runny nose. Since my friend has been in jail, he has been sick three times. A sick inmate must put an application in two weeks prior to getting antibiotics, but how is it possible to know two weeks ahead of when you will be sick.
In conclusion, Essex County has poor living and working conditions. People die from mold in their houses. Is Essex County meant for rehabilitation for a DUI or speeding tickets, or is it a place to die by mold?
Sincerely,
An Essex County Citizen
