What kind of a sentence will I get for "Aiding an Offender?"?

Postby janyd » Tue Dec 20, 2011 3:20 am

Last month, the police came to my house at 3 am to pick up my boyfriend who had a warrant. I told them that he wasn't here because he had seen them coming and had slipped under the house (I live in a mobile home). But I wasn't sure where he had gone for sure. Well, they went through my house to find him but with no success. When they were leaving, the K-9s got his scent as they were going by the skirting on my trailer. Needless to say, the dogs got him out!! It was horrible what they let the dogs do to him!!! He was bit so badly that he had to be brought by ambulance to the hospital. His warrant was for missing court...not usually such a big deal!! He was charged with a misdemeanor...Obstructing legal process, while I was charged with a felony for aiding an offender!! How could he get a misdemeanor and I got a felony?? Can they legally do this?? All I did is say one sentence "He's not here"! They took me to jail also, but was let go the next day. My next court date is in January. I live in Minnesota. Has anyone been through anyting similar that could tell me what to expect?? I have no other felonies. Or maybe there's someone who knows MN law and could tell me if they can make a felony charge stick, and if so, what kind of sentence can I expect? It just seems odd that my boyfriend got a misdemeanor and I got a felony!! I want to thank you in advance for any information you may have for me. Have a Merry Christmas!!

What you may say is horrible at what the dogs did, i say good for him running like a coward instead of being a man and facing up to his mature adult responsibilities.

The ambulance was PURELY precautionary. Unless he AGGRESSIVELY fought the dogs, he wasn't injured enough by their bite to break the skin. He may have had a misdemeanor BEFORE he hid, but he has a felony NOW.

Edit: Your boyfriend is LYING to you. They don't bring the dogs to arrest someone for a misdemeanor.

"He's not here."

Never talk to the cops without your lawyer present.

Honey, you'll do prison time. The charge WILL stick, you can count on that.

You can expect at least 3 years in prison, as much as 5 years.

Quit whining and accept responsibility for your own actions.

And too bad about the dog bites..... that's your fault also.
