What should I do if someone threatened to knock me out?

My next door neighbor is a trouble-maker and picks fights with people left and right. He's a grown 30-something year old adult. A couple of nights ago, him and his friends were in a big fight with another group of guys, right in the middle of the street. Empty beer bottles were thrown and one guy even had a baseball bat. It got hectic and out of control and the cops were called quickly. Myself and my family noticed that our car was hit with something and was dented (we believe the guy with the baseball bat did this). Anyway, I said to my family "I'm glad (our toddler) wasn't playing outside when this happened. I don't like these things happening around her". Apparently this ticked off my next door neighbor, who heard this. At the scene, when I said this, he told me to shut the f up. I told him I meant nothing by it towards him and thought that was that as he appeared to have calmed down. The next day, while I was at work, he told my mother-in-law the following - "No disrespect to you or your husband, but the next time I see (my name), I'm going to knock him out". He's the kind of classless imbecile that wouldn't hesitate to just run up to me and do something like this out of the blue. What should I do? I have no interest in engaging in any fights. If I call the cops, what would happen? Could I use my mother-in-law as a witness that he made this threat, since he told her directly? If so, what would the cops be able to do?

Thanks all.
