Hi,
Thanks for the Clarification.
I assume that you are flying into Kennedy Airport in New York City first? When you land, you could easily go directly to New York City and spend your first few days there followed by Princeton. (Click here for transportation from Kennedy airport to New York City: http://www.nyc-visitor-discounts.com/kennedy-airport.html.) If you want to go to Washington, DC after Princeton, the most time efficient and least costly would be to rent a car, especially given that there are 5 of you. Taking a bus or a train would be costly given that you'd have 5 tickets to purchase. Also, traveling with a 2 year old(I've done it), you would benefit from the most efficient way possible. When you are finished in Washington, you could drive back to Kennedy and drop the car off, OR, you could fly out of Washington and go home. However, flying in and out of different airports often adds money to your tickets. I've driven from New York to Washington many, many times(my sister use to live there) and, depending on traffic, it took about 5 hours or so. Haven't made the trip from Princeton.

Lodging: Given that there are 5 of you, a suite hotel or an apartment might work out better for you. Especially with a young child, you'll have access to and the convenience of a kitchen. this will also allow you to save money on food. Eat certain meals and home and treat yourself to some good restaurants with the money you'll save. Here are some page to review for suitable accommodations:

Tourist Attractions:
Many people don't realize how exhausting New York City can be. There is SO much to see and do, so my advise is to pace yourself. Consider doing one attraction in the morning, go back to your room to rest, and do another in the afternoon.
With 3 days, I'd recommend:
1) The Empire State Building OR an even prettier view(you'll see Central Park) with less lines is Top of the Rock. Check our information and discounts here:http://www.nyc-visitor-discounts.com/empire-state-building.htmlhttp://www.nyc-visitor-discounts.com/top-of-the-rock.html
2) Statue of Liberty: http://www.nyc-visitor-discounts.com/statue-of-liberty-national-monument.html
3) A Broadway Show is a must. However, I wouldn't recommend it with a child. If his grandmother will babysit, go! If you need a recommendation, I'd be happy to give it to you. Otherwise, take the family to see the Gazillion Bubble Show, your son will love it. Let's face it, if he is happy, so will you be:> Another great show for families is The Lion King. If you go, get Orchestra Seats, first 6 rows, preferably on the aisle, as the animals will walk right past you. Click here for ideas on how to save on theater tickets. There are many. http://www.nyc-visitor-discounts.com/discount-broadway-theater-tickets.html
4) One great restaurant. New York City is home to some of THE best restaurants in the world. You should treat yourself to at least one great meal. There are many TOP restaurants that offer deals. http://www.nyc-visitor-discounts.com/restaurant-discounts.html
5) Take a general tour on New York City: Given that you will only be in NYC for a few days, taking a basic bus tour will give you an overall view of the city. I do this in every new city that I visit. Here are some options http://www.nyc-visitor-discounts.com/new-york-city-bus-tours.html
6) New York City is home to tons of museums. The most visited is probably the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's massive. If you go, plan to visit for a morning. Sign up for one of their free 1-hour general tours. It will give you a taste of the museums. Here's a listing of museums and discount options :http://www.nyc-visitor-discounts.com/new-york-city-museums.html
7) It might also be fun to be in a TV show audience. Send away for tickets now. They are free. We are seeing Jimmy Fallon again in a week or so. http://www.nyc-visitor-discounts.com/free-tv-show-tickets.html. Lots of top shows are filmed here.
