Why are gays treated so differently?

Postby eliot » Thu Aug 02, 2012 7:53 am

I know this is a really controversial topic right now, and I would appreciate if people who are on kind of the same page as me, or people who can answer respectfully, please do so. I don't want any hurtful comments.

I always wondered why people don't like gays and lesbos, and some of the reason being the bible. I'm a Christian, and I believe in the Word, but I don't understand why people think that because God said they were sinners, the people can act like God and shun them. I really think that even though they sin, they have the choice and the right to sin. It may not be the best choice, but putting up laws about this stuff isn't going to make them stop. It's just going to make them defiant of the laws, for example, what happened with the black civil rights and the women's rights.

Another problem I face is that I really don't think that my family is on the same page as me. I'm afraid to ask them about anything like that, in fear of being yelled at or cast out. I mean my cousin while I was at our state fair, asked afterwards if I had noticed there were a lot of lesbians, and she acted like it was a bad thing. I had replied "No I hadn't noticed. I guess I wasnt paying much attention.". I feel like I have no one to talk to on the subject because of that, and I really need someone to help. Because I'm tired of people looking upon the gays as worthless and stupid and horrible animals. They're still people and I think God wants us to treat them like people, even though they are sinners. Because they sin, they ARE people, just like anyone else. So I don't see why they cant have their rights that they deserve. It actually pains me to see when people shun them, and I just don't know what I can do, especially about my family's opinion.

To put it simply, people fear the unknown and the things that are different.
Now curiosity is what keeps that fear in czech.

I'm not religious so I won't agree that they're sinners, I see nothing inherently wrong with two consenting adults of the same-sex loving eachother.

It's not detrimental in anyway.

However, you're more down to earth than a large amount of Christians. I welcome that..

I'm an Atheist, and while I disagree with your opinion that being gay is a sin, I respect and applaud your open-mindedness towards the situation. I wish there were more people like you.

To be honest I kind of feel like history is repeating itself. The homophobes of today will look like the racists back in the '40s.

One particular thing that I believe creates this barrier between homophobes and homosexuals is the fact that, since homosexuals are incredibly rare (relatively of course), it almost seems wrong to the rest of the world. I live around members of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered) and therefore do not find it wrong or weird despite being raised in a conservative homophobic family.

I also believe that religion does contribute to this in one way or another (not trying to directly offend you), as most religious books state that marriage must be between a man and a woman, leading humanity to think rock-headedly about any other type of relationship.

If you were a real Christian you would have read the Bible yourself and learned that homosexuality isn't actually a sin. Sure there are some questionably passages about homosexuality, but if you look at them in context, they have entirely different meanings. The Leviticus one being the most common one, but Leviticus is not even meant for us, it was meant for jewish priests thousands of years ago, and also tells us not to cut our hair, or use types of cotton.

You can try talking to your family, but that's very risky..

We're treated differently because it's not as common as being straight. But being straight & gay is the exact same thing. Love is love. Gender attraction has no effect on that.

I understand why some people are against it. I totally respect that. But it's when they don't know how to mind their own business & tell us we're going to Hell when I get really irritated.

Now, lets move to the religious side of the question. God doesn't hate anyone. He created every trait we have. He loves us all.

Alright, so the Bible says homosexuality is a sin. But so is lying, gossiping, or even getting jealous. But what makes me sad is when someone brings up homosexuality in conversation, the religious people become repulsed & aggravated. But when people mention lying, gossiping, jealousy, or even MURDER, they're completely calm & speak like professionals. So then I feel like they think being gay is worse than killing someone.

You, my friend, are a very smart, cool person!! (:
