Why is it illegal to wear patent leather shoes in public, in ohio?

I saw it on some page about strange laws, and I was curious... as to why?

Heh. An oldie but a goodie. The reason was that men would polish their patent leather shoes to a very high shine and then use them to peek up women's dresses while dancing with them (or just in passing if the opportunity presented itself). Polished correctly, patent leather shoes are like mirrors.

I'd seriously doubt that this "law" is still enforced or that anyone in law enforcement even knows of it.

First I wouldn't believe all those strange law stories unless I actually saw it in the state code from a trusted source.

That said it could have been for any number of reasons including some strange fact that patent leather shoes were not made at the time by any business in Ohio or people thought they allowed you to look up skirts.

There are many of these 'strange laws' sites, and they essentially just regurgitate the same misleading or outright incorrect information over and over. The laws either were repealed a long time ago, or never existed at all.

Go ahead and wear patent leather shoes or any other sort of footwear..

2 possibilities:

1) It isn't illegal and you should not look to a "page about strange laws" for legal advice.
2) It is illegal and it is because at some point legislature passed a law saying so.

It's just women, so I'm going to take a wild stab and say it's some kind of cros-dressing prohibition.
