Example: if I charged $500 for a television 5 months ago would this debt be able to be discharged in bankruptcy filed today? or what would be the length of time the debt would need to be.

Although there is no hard and fast rule as to "length" of a debt, most likely the debt you described would be dischargeable.

Nearly all consumer bankruptcy attorneys offer free consultations. Take advantage of this to find one that you are comfortable with and who will evaluate and explain your options to you based on the details of your particular situation.
