Would the police be able to obtain my IP address even if I didn't brake the law?

Postby vemados » Thu Jun 07, 2012 9:24 am

So if I was border line, but didn't actually brake any laws. The police are monitoring my online activity through an undercover email that was exchanging emails back and forth with me. Would they be able to get an IP address, or anything like that? Should I be worried if I stop any and all border line illegal activity right now?

There is no such thing as 'borderline illegal' It either is or is not. If they really want to find your IP, they can easily do so.

they don't need to email you to see your ip address, every site you enter keeps a record of information you didn't even know was registered, just type "what's my ip" in google and it will tell you

If Atty Gen Eric Holder gets his way then "yes."

Holder, who once argued against the right of private citizens to have encryption software, believes that all IP activity should be logged and records maintained by ISPs for up to six years.

An IP address is not something a person is "able" to obtain---whenever your computer makes a connection with any other, that includes the IP address. It's basically an identifier, like a name or face.

The police can't know what IP address the e-mail was sent from by reading it. But in all likelihood, your e-mail provider keeps a log of what IP addresses have accessed your account; almost all of them do. It would not be very hard to subpoena their records and thus get your IP address and ISP. Using that, they could contact your ISP and find out which customer sent the e-mail.

Maybe, depends if you know how to hide your IP address which is easy, and No a IP address isn't a unique identifier for someone that knows what they are doing.

All you need to do is tunnel your traffic.

Also the government monitors all communications, usually though the NSA.

--------------------------
They may of track you though your email, emails usually contain a source IP Address,
and most emails even if you aren't police can see it in the header if you know where to look.

Anyone who knows what they're doing (police or not) can get your IP address, no matter what you're up to.
