A Job Scenario, Best Way to leave?

Postby pascoe69 » Mon Jul 30, 2012 11:36 pm

Based in the UK.

Hi, decided to get as many opinions as I can for this job scenario for a friend, after yahoo, we're going to phone a couple of advice centres etc..

Heres the scenario:

A friend has been temping for about 4 months at work place "A", his contract is due to expire, however he loves working at work place "A" (travel is perfect), the people love him there to. So they have advised him to apply for jobs, but work place "A" have been taking their time posting vacancies on their web site (due to a re-structure).

In addition to this, My friend is also signed on to a job agency, now they have been told to look for permanent jobs for him, and they found him one, he went to the interview and passed. He accepted the agencies offer over the phone to work at work place "B", he has not seen the contract yet (the agency say that he should receive something via email). He is no longer signed on to a job agent as they have found him a perm job and he has accepted it verbally.

But work place "B" is pretty far travel wise, when compared to work place "A", but nothing overly far.

My friend had to accept work place "B", because work place "A", were taking their time with advertising vacancies & and a job there is not promised, but is still waiting and will apply for vacancies at work place "A" when they become available.

Irrespective of pay, his dilemma is if he passes the interview at work place "A", how does he resign from work place "B", having not seen the contract, making the agency accept the job on his behalf, and with the rule of one week notice if you want to resign from a job, according to uk law (direct gov)?

Its basically the 30th jul 2012, so the time frame is really tight, my friend tells me that if work place "A", does not put up any vacancies by Aug 15th 2012, he'll settle for work place "B". I think he starts work place "B" 3rd sep 12 & finishes work place "A", 1st sep 12.

Long story short:

-The best way to resign from work place "B", assuming he passes the interview for work place "A" (taking account if he does not see the contract for work place B till 3rd sep 12, also work place "B" have already booked my friend on a conference)

Hope this makes sense, thanks for any advice in advanced.

I dont think the 1 week rule works if you do not work for the company. Accepting a job verbally does not mean you work for them, that only applies when you start. You could just write them a letter stating you have decided to decline their offer.

Although a verbal agreement has been made over the acceptance of the position with 'B', your friend has not yet signed a contract. Therefore he would be under no obligation to give the statutory 1 weeks notice.
