About the pros and cons of being a single dad?

Postby aethelbert35 » Thu Dec 22, 2011 6:18 pm

I still have more/less some time to take that decision, but I guess I would like to be a single dad, in my whole life I have just met one and I don't know what society has to say or if is ready or not (Western Europe).

I have two means to accomplish that, the first is adoption and the second is to borrow my best friend's uterus for 9 months.

I have hear many Christians/conservatives to say that children have the right to have a mom and a dad (Bullshit as always, cause there is no such right by national or international law) And with so many abandoned children I'm pretty sure I can cover their rights.

Have you hear about single dads? what is your experience?

About the pros and cons of being a single dad?

Postby chepito » Thu Dec 22, 2011 6:23 pm

I raised three on my own, girls now 25 and 24 and a son who's 21. I got custody of the kids because their Mom got hooked on prescription drugs. She has not reentered their lives.

My only problems came mostly from my employer in the beginning, when I'd have to miss work, leave early or come in late he resented it because, "That's the woman's job.". He finally came around after he saw how dedicated to my kids I was. Also, a lot of coworkers didn't see why I couldn't go out to bars with them after work. Again, most of them became supporters too.

I had a sister who helped by being a strong female influence for the girls, there are some things a father just doesn't know about girls. Vice versa for boys and mothers I believe.

I got both girls thru a 4 year university and my son is now a junior. They've all been a blessing but this is not how I had planned to raise them. Good luck if you try it on your own. There is no grand master plan or "right" way to do it. You'll have to make it up as you go along, every day and every child is different.

P.S. I am a Christian and raised my kids in a Christian home, They have all made professions of faith on their own, just as I did, and are happy and stable with their choices.

Being a single dad without any commitments is okay but being a child without a live-in committed father sucks.

About the pros and cons of being a single dad?

I have a friend who is a single dad (although not by choice). He is an amazing father, but he had to rely on his parents a lot especially during the babies first year. He worked, but had to switch to nights only, as here only mothers get 6 months maternity pay (fathers only get 2 weeks). Obviously the usual tiredness, luck of sleep etc...everything mothers go through, he dealt with impressively with little discomfort (unlike me when I had mine hehe). It gets easier when they go to nursery, but it's a serious commitment for one person being it a father or a mother.
I think it's great that you want to adopt, considering how much unwanted children there are in the world, just be sure, as that's something you have to live with for the rest of your life, it can be hard on two people I can only imagine how hard it can be on one.
In any case good luck!
