Animal on friend's property?

Postby nann » Mon Apr 16, 2012 9:18 am

My friend keeps getting a dog in her backyard that isn't hers. It has a collar but no tags or mircochip. The dog is friendly. I hate to have the dog picked up by animals control but since it isn't on the owners property it is considered a stray, right? Can I take him home since it is a stray?

How do you know it doesn't have a microchip? Did you take it to a vet's office or someplace else that has a reader?

You have absolutely no right to keep someone else's dog. For all you know, somebody's frantically looking for this dog that IS wearing a collar.

Before this dog gets hit by a car and killed, some mature adult needs to call animal control to pick it up so it can be reunited with its legal owner.

i say keep him unless you hear that the owner is looking for him, its safer that way rather than letting him roam around by himself.

How do you know it has no microchip?
Only a vet or dog warden (animal control) or dog shelter, would have a microchip scanner to detect the microchip.
Take the dog to a vet or call animal control, and get the dog scanned for a microchip.

well i would suggest that you take the dog home with you and post lost posters around the neighborhood maybe put an ad in the lost and found section of the paper also check to see if the dog isnt already in the lost section of the paper and i guess if no one comes looking in over a month the dogs yours you could also have animal control pick it up with the condition that if they can not find the owners to notify you so you can adopt it but i dont know if you'll get the dog we found a golden retriever once at my dads work he looked just like our dog my dad actually called my mom to make sure our dog was at home any ways my dad took him to the shelter and asked if the dog was not adopted in two weeks to call us and we'd take him we would of loved to had him but he was adopted right away because he was such a great dog but we really didnt need another dog at the time any ways just know that if you take him to the shelter theyll have it fixed and it will be a few weeks until you can adopt it

I'm pretty sure(from watching animal cops) that once the dog is no longer on the owners property it is considered a stray. Since you have had it checked for a microchip and it has no tags, I think you should take it to keep it from getting hurt and put up posters. If no contacts you and you want the dog I think you can keep it.
