Another Step In The Right Direction! Court Overturns Prop. 8 In California, Says State Can’t Ban Gay Marriage

The 9th Circuit Court in California struck down the state's voter-passed ban on gay marriage, ruling 2-1 that it violates the rights of gay Californians.http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/court-overturns-prop-8-california-says-state-t-181451250.htmlDo you think that we are finally shaking off the narrow mindedness of some of the citizens, and accepting the fact that laws cannot be based on the handbook of one religion?

I just wanted to make clear that the underlying issue isn't religion, but homophobia. I think you are right in saying that the "argument" used by homophobes is almost always a religious one. This because no valid argument exists. Christians in general, along with the rest of society, have been moving to a place of acceptance of gay marriage for quite some time. Sure, there continues to be a vocal minority who adhere to their fundamentalist beliefs, but their numbers are ever shrinking. It will probably take at least another generation before they dwindle to a point that they aren't really that significant to the overall population, but a generation doesn't seem as long to me as it did in my younger days.   hipnek 23 months ago

Excellent news! That's one small step for the 9th Circuit Court, a giant step for mankind. Well, okay not a giant step, but long overdue. I hope the homophobes and copious ignorant in this country are beginning to realize that there is another point of view that is gaining momentum.   Skylight 23 months ago

Your question called people who are against the original legislation narrow minded so your question starts out not serious IMO. It is similar to stating as a fact that the Tea Party is dead based on the opinion of one person.   Directmale 23 months ago

Why beat up Christians on the issue of homosexuality.........unless those who mention Christianity are willing to beat up Muslims and other religions as well. After all, most Muslim states characterize homosexuality as a crime, and often jail or kill homosexuals who act upon their urges.   charlie95 23 months ago

So now you believe everything Tea Party leaders say or do you just believe the ones who say things you believe? Do you cite as trurh any other statements by Tea Party leaders or members when they disagree with you? It sounds very selective to me.   Directmale 23 months ago

On a positive note, it will probably be appealed to the SCOTUS(which is the last thing the right should consider doing) where it will be ruled to be unconstitutional in every state, and finally the right wing nutjobs won't be able to push that agenda anymmore as every state has to allow and honor gay marraige.   Schelli 23 months ago

"You seem to be suggesting that homophobia is limited to religious people," - Ture, but considering something li9ke 90% of American self identifies as religious(and mostly some flavor of christian) I think that is the source of the most vocal proponents.   Schelli 23 months ago
