Any Org.'s that give General Legal Aid for Veterans (not disability/benefits related)?

Are there any groups that give free or low cost legal aid to veterans of the armed services on general legal issues?

A friend of mine is back from the Marines after two tours and he's fighting with his ex for any custody of his son. He'd settle for a weekend every other week. He has a lawyer but he was the cheapest my friend could find and he's getting what he paid for.

The worst part for him is the whole process my friend is going through is that it's alien to him.

I'm not asking if their are places that would give him a free lawyer, I know that's too much, but are their any legal groups, hotlines, or federal/state(IL) services that could at least talk to him, explain to him what's going on, how custody proceedings work, explain to him what he should be looking for in his lawyer and what his lawyer should be doing and not doing?
