Are teachers allowed teachers allowed to read students diary/journal?

Postby chansomps » Wed Apr 25, 2012 7:36 am

My friend has this journal that her and her friend write in with each other. Her teacher had tooken up the journal, but here's the thing. My friend and her friend wrote some bad things about that teacher in it. My question is.. Does the teacher even have the right to look and read inside her journal. Because the last time i checked, it wasn't that teachers property. So i think that, because its not her property she IS NOT! allowed to read it. And we have a feeling she read it, because she was very mad and upset when my friend tried to get it back. The teacher, said "GET OUT OF MY ROOM NOW!" well yeah. so Does the teacher have the right to look and read inside someone else's property, wouldn't that be like profanity?

If it is on school property she has the right to read it. Since so much violence is happening in schools today, teachers now have the right to go through anything on school property. Your friends should of kept that Diary at home or off school grounds. I would try and talk to either the teacher or the guidance counselor about what happened to see if you can smooth things over a bit.

She has the right to read it. But most teachers won't. Tell you friends to stop being so bad.

If the student has it out and is reading it or writing in it against rules or when they are supposed to be doing something else , YES! After reading your statement and seeing that you probably get F's in English class,I would concentrate on getting an education , not some juvenile diary.

If you bring it to school, it's no longer private. They do have the right to read through it if they have a legitimate reason to do so.

The reason you don't write things like that is because the wrong person might read it. If you have something private you don't want anyone to read, you keep it private; by using it at school (probably being inappropriate), you risk it being confiscated and read.

It's just a hard lesson they have to learn. Being a jerk sometimes gets you in trouble. Honestly, it's better that they learn that lesson now while it might be early enough for them to adjust.
