@Atheists Do you think all schools should have a logic class as a requirement for graduation?

Postby modraed » Sat Jul 07, 2012 7:46 pm

We have too many delusional/killers/rapists and other scumbags in America.
Do you think we should have "logic" as a requirement for all schools?

While it may be easy for some, you have to admit that people are lacking common sense in this world.
We have teachers that molest little children, and other teachers who think the lochness monster is real. *cough* (google it)

If a teacher still believes in mythological beings that were obviously a fairy story, then something is clearly wrong with the education system. If someone who went to college for an education, to TEACH other people, and they STILL ended up stupid then something is clearly wrong?

You would think math would give someone logic, but it clearly hasn't... you would think science would open someones eyes on reality but it hasn't. (Not for all)

What we need is a new way to educate people, our current and past generations are doomed, let them rot. But what about the future generations? If we could give most people common sense, and the ability to critically think on their actions, and everything they do and how it might affect others, then wouldn't we as people become better?

If most people gained common sense, wouldn't the amount of rapists... and killers decrease? Wouldn't the amount of depressed & jobless people decrease... Wouldn't there be less people with 20 children and no job?

I think we need a logic/common sense class that helps people know not to play around on the freeway, I think we need a logic/common sense class that teaches people the difference between hallucinations and reality.
Instead of stopping douchebags, we should be PREVENTING them.

Do you think a logic class would be appropiate for all schools? If people are able to think more critically, and apply that logic to things, then wouldn't that as a result help everything else?
If someone has logic, it should make them do better in other classes, it should help them perform better overall.

I'll be honest, I didn't read the whole thing, but common sense can't be taught

A logic class would be completely pointless. Perhaps if school systems hired real teachers who encouraged skepticism, critical thinking and better work ethic, these things would be less of a problem.

But there's many people you won't ever be able to change. The general population of every country is incredibly stupid and easily manipulated. Take pride in being an elite thinker.

we have maths

but i get your point
we should start testing them with problem solving riddles, make the logic literal.

riddles are fun

What you are asking is for schools to completely eradicate the very thought of possibility (this is in terms of the loch-ness monster) Even the most intelligent people you may say lose logic, my main example being the theoretical physicist Erwin Schrödinger and his famous experiment of Schrödinger's cat, logic says that the cat will be dead when you look. However when you look at it without logic you come across one of the most important Quantum Mechanics, the Uncertainty Principle. If men like these took "logic" at school we may still be in the dark on certain things. That being said I do believe that you raise some valid and interesting points in your argument, although I wouldn't put common sense down to
"If most people gained common sense, wouldn't the amount of rapists... and killers decrease? Wouldn't the amount of depressed & jobless people decrease... Wouldn't there be less people with 20 children and no job?"
I believe that this is something that is change by the environment in how they are brought up, in fact if you look at some of the most famous killers of all time you can also see they are some of the most intelligent people and in fact it is because of their common sense that they were able to do some of the things they did.
I enjoyed reading your views hopefully people can try to be constructive

Critical Thinking would help. But, I think back to when I was in high school. I just don't see that as feasible. How many high school kids actually pay attention in ALL of their classes to begin with? I think before we start talking about having "logic class", we should start by teaching our kids HOW to learn. Most don't seem to know how to even do that.

I wholeheartedly agree with you.
I'm sure that it would open the eyes of young people to the real world.
BUT...I think the implementation of such a programme in America would be vigorously opposed by the religious conservatives, viewing it as an attack on their imaginary gods. At the moment it's a stalemate situation. One of the more liberal, "Post Christian", European countries might be the right place to begin.

This would be a suitable subject for a thesis. Are you in a position to pursue it?

In the UK(Scotland anyway) we have a compulsory class called RMPS (religion moral and Philosophical studies). This class tackles critical thinking in a non biased way, makes you look at the bigger questions and most importantly, makes you question those questions. This link http://www.meldrumacademy.co.uk/Subjects/Social%20Subjects/PupilResourcesHigherandInt2RMPS.htm is from a random Scottish school and gives an overview of the course expectations for a 16-18 year old if you're interested. It maybe seems a bit ironic that compulsory religious studies are beneficial for critical thinking and logic but it can work.
