Bigelow, Kennard Company

Postby Meng » Wed Mar 25, 2015 4:18 am

In cleaning out some boxes I found 12 cocktail forks that are stamped Bigelow,Kennard & Co. with a marking of 925/1000 and the word patented.  I was wondering if this means it is sterling silver and what the value of them might be.

Hello Stella, thank you for your question.

It sounds like you made a very nice find!  Yes, the 925/1000 mark means the forks are sterling silver.  FYI, Bigelow, Kennard & Co. were in business from 1863 until 1922.

Without being able to see the forks, it's difficult to give an estimate.  I don't believe any design patents were issued to Bigelow Kennard, so the forks were probably made by someone else and retailed by them.  If there are any other marks on the forks, let me know.  Anyway, if they're your generic run-of-the-mill pattern by an average maker, I'd put an estimate anywhere from $100 to $200 on them.  If we can figure out they're made by an important maker or the design is a collectible one, the price can go up.

Regards,

Michelle
