Are Breaks mandatory in an 8 hour shift in the state of North Carolina.  Also if you work 10 or 12 hours are the employer required to allow the employee a 10 or 15 minute break.

Breaks In An 8 Hour Shift

The Fair Labor Standards Act(FLSA) does not require breaks or meal periods be given to workers. Some states may have requirements for breaks or meal periods. If you work in a state which does not require breaks or meal periods, these benefits are a matter of agreement between the employer and the employee The state of North Carolina has no state provision for meal breaks.

For more information contact the Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor. Look under Employee rights.http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/

You can also visit your state Department of Labor by clicking on your state at the following website:http://www.dol.gov/dol/location.htm

Hope this helps you somewhat.
