Can I still be a police officer while my dad has a "bad record"?

He has actions in his record such as DWI, drugs (coccaine), and avoiding probation and if he ever tries to renew his driver's license, the police will more than likely pick him up because of his record and are looking for him as of now. He also has very bad credit and has done a few attacks on people (one person being my own mom). I want a career in the field of criminal justice, but in high school I was taking a criminal justice class and my teacher told the class if a close family member has a "bad record", then we'd be rejected after applying for positions in the field, regardless of how well we did in the qualifications. He's still married to my mom but I currently don't depend on him and don't know where he is; I'm 20 years of age if that makes a difference.

Your teacher is very wrong. Your dad's record will have NO impact on you being able to become a police officer.
