You can sue the police for Malicious Prosecution or for an illegal arrest if you can prove that they knowingly lied or set you up. You can sue in Federal Court under a 1983 Civil Rights violation if you are a minority. In Manhattan a police officer was just convicted of planting drugs on a Black man just to meet his quotas on arrests. The Internal Affairs Departments was tapping his cell phone and recorded him telling a girlfriend, " I just fried another N-----er" The practice is called " flaking" and it is not common but it happens, especially in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. The police also rob drug dealers, use fake search warrants to take their drugs and money, and have sex with prostitutes. They lie and say they saw the drugs in plain sight or that the dealer threw them on the ground. They make illegal stops and searches, especially with minority males in high crime areas. The judges and prosecutors are well aware of this and will go after a dirty cop if you can prove it.

This is not a small claims court issue as this would be a criminal matter

Yes you could sue him and the department and the city but you will not win and the cost to you would be enormous.

And how can you prove he lied? And with your statute of limitations concern tells me this happened a long time ago which makes your case even harder to prove, or your thinking about taking it right up to the limit you could sue which also makes your case harder to prove
