Can i work 16 hours in a 24 hour period?

Postby link » Sat Nov 19, 2011 7:09 am

I am 16 and live in Pennsylvania and i recently got a summer job. My first 2 days that i have been scheduled are 3:15-10:45pm on Saturday and 6:30AM to 3PM on Sunday. Are they allowed to schedule me for more than 8 hours in a 24 hour period if they are on separate dates? I'm really confused because the child labor laws don't specify if a "day" is 12am-12am or any 24 hour period.

A day is considered from 12am on day to 12am the next day. What they are asking you to do is 100% legal and easily do-able from your vantage point. You can ask your manager that you prefer to not come in before noon when you have to work late the night before or try to trade shifts with someone if you really have a problem with it.

FYI: Doctors often work 30 hours shifts at least once or twice a week... yup, that's 30 hours straight, no sleep. Those short little shifts you are doing is nothing.
