Can my boss fire me if I won't stay for extra hours?

Postby varik » Fri Apr 01, 2011 2:05 am

I work part-time at a BestBuy store in North Carolina. On numerous occasions my Managers have told me that I am required to stay later than scheduled if they ask me to. I am a college student and I have very early classes. I have tried reasoning with my managers yet they say they can make me stay past schedule hours. Sometimes I'm at work for over 12 hours a day. Is this against NC OSHA labor laws? Can they fire me if I leave at my schedule clock out time anyway? Should I contact HR for BestBuy?

I am not familiar with NC labor laws, but under federal law, and the majority of the states, they can fire you for refusing overtime. The rule is, "If they are willing to pay the freight, you must carry the weight".

Start looking for a job with less responsibilities. Arguing with your supervisors will not lead to a good employment history, and will cause problems when you apply for that dream job you want after graduation.
