Can my employer make me drive a lorry.?

Postby dennie18 » Mon Jul 23, 2012 9:48 pm

My contract has me as a warehouse operative but I have been driving the lorry for them as relief for two years. Recently they asked us to sign a new contract but it still says warehouse operative. All I want is some recognition for the job that I do. Also when I drive the lorry I get £1.50 extra per hour. To get this I have to put in a weekly overtime sheet and write DRIVING RATE on any day I drive the truck. I don't think this is a very efficient method surely it would be simpler to pay me a certain rate as a relief lorry driver. Are there any laws regarding the contract for a relief lorry driver.

what is it that you want? a T shirt ? a pat on the butt for being a good boy? They compensate you for your services if you dont want extra money or overtime tell them forget whinning on the internet thats not going to ever work for you. would you like some cheese and crackers? people are out of work for years sometimes and you have a dedent job with decent pay and its not good enough. Get over yourself and be glad you have a job and they asked you to sign another contract. This means they are keeping you get it? They could have dumped you on your head and likely will if they new what a whiner you really are so suck it up like a man and be glad you are a working man .

Same where I am mate!! You get a bonus pay rate for doing the extra work... I wouldnt complain about it hahaha!!! For example if I work around town I get one rate if I go country then I get a higher pay rate and if I pull a Road Train or a B-Double which you may or may not be familiar with ( basically its a prime mover pulling more than one trailer ) then I get even higher pay... Yes it does seem inefficient but its the way things seem to go in this industry... Although driving a truck is probably more work than being in the warehouse so they pay you more for it... same with bigger trucks the bigger usually the better the pay :) I don't think your employer can make you drive the lorry if you don't want to because you are not really employed to do that however if you are chasing the extra cash then just take it when you can!!!

So long as you are legal and licensed to drive the vehicle all well and good.
The fact that you can and are willing to drive on an ad hoc basis makes you more employable as a warehouse operative as opposed to someone who won't drive the lorry. You are also paid extra to do so.

Are you looking for a contract which says you're a lorry driver who will work in the warehouse when there's no driving work and be prepared to take a £1.50 per hour pay cut when doing so? It's not going to happen is it?

You have a job with the offer of a new contract, if you want to be a lorry driver then look elsewhere

The company are within their rights to employ you as a warehouseman and ask you to drive which you agree and which you get paid more.
I do not see what the problem is, if you were employed as a driver and asked to work in the warehouse would you be prepared to get £1.50 less an hour.

I worked for a company that had permanent drivers, occasional drivers and warehouse men, occasional drivers were paid an hourly rate per week between that of warehouse man and permanent driver it worked out to be Warehouse pay for 2 days a week and permanent drivers pay for 3 days a week
