Can You Ever Tell In How Many Days Or Hours Would You Begin Labor ?

If only there was a way to know! As a birth doula, I would love to tell you, yes, you will start labor in X days.  Unfortunately, there is no sure way to know when your baby is coming, unless you happen to have a planned cesarian birth.    You mentioned some positive signs that labor may start soon, but until you have a nice regular pattern of contractions, there is nothing definite.    If this is your first baby, there is a likelihood that you will feel lots of Braxton Hicks "warm up" contractions.  Lots of people get frustrated with them because they think they aren't doing anything except being painful.  Contrary to that opinion, Braxton Hicks are doing something.  They are thinning out your cervix and helping to dilate as well.   Just remember that even if you see some signs, you could have a wait ahead of you.  I know it's very difficult to wait at this stage of the game but it's all worth it in the end.   Good luck to you and if you haven't gotten your doula yet, you'd better check it out!  Sources: personal experience   zanie's Recommendations The Birth Partner, Second Edition Amazon List Price: $14.95 Used from: $8.00 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5(based on 52 reviews) The Doula Book: How a Trained Labor Companion Can Help You Have a Shorter, Easier, and Healthier Birth Amazon List Price: $20.00 Used from: $9.49 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5(based on 15 reviews) Labor Progress Handbook Amazon List Price: $29.95 Used from: $23.66 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5(based on 9 reviews) Birthing from Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation Amazon List Price: $19.95 Used from: $6.57 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5(based on 103 reviews) zanie 75 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment. None that I ever heard of... It'll happen when it happens. "Two weeks early to two weeks late is perfectly normal," and "Fortunately, it's not a chronic condition!"   That's what my doctor kept telling me with my 2nd, who arived a week and a half past her due date. I'd get braxton hicks contractions, and they'd stop. More BH contractions, and they'd stop. BOY was I glad when she finally decided to put in an appearance!   However, I believe that extra week and a half put an extra half-pound on her. She weighed in at 9 lbs, 2 oz! Can You Ever Tell In How Many Days Or Hours Would You Begin Labor ?

Postby Alhwin » Sat Feb 08, 2014 8:46 am

But I'm sorry to tell you that even water breaking, for example, doesn't always happen before labor.  With my first labor, my OB broke the bag of waters minutes before my daughter was born and after I had already been in labor for maybe 8 hours.    But even for the next two labors, my water broke after labor had already started.   There are a few things "they say" can be signs of an impending labor.  They include: The baby "dropping" lower in your pelvis -- I personally remember this feeling, and the pressure in my pelvis in the few days preceding the start of labor. As you mention, the mucus plug, but for me, I lost my mucus plug actually AFTER labor had started.  But for some folks it can come out even a few days before labor begins Water breaking -- That is usually an imminent sign that the baby will be here within a day!  Things do tend to speed up rapidly after your water breaks, the babies head resting square on your cervix moves things along more rapidly A regular feeling of crampiness -- this is usually the actual onset of labor.  I remember for all three of my labors being asleep at night and the feeling of crampiness happening.  This, along with the pelvic pressure, were the first initial signs I had that full labor was imminent.   I found this great chart at the University of Michigan website(it's hard for me as an Ohio State fan to admit something good about U of M, but even I can't deny them this one.  There is also alot of other interesting labor information on that site: http://www.med.umich.edu/obgyn/smartmoms/labor/labor/beginning.htm   Differences Between   False Labor and True Labor  Type of Change False Labor True Labor Timing of contractions. Often are irregular and do not consistently get closer together(called Braxton-Hicks contractions) Come at regular intervals and, as time goes on, get closer and closer together. Change with movement Contractions may stop when you walk or rest, or even may stop with a change of position. Contractions continue despite movement. Location of contractions Often felt in the abdomen Usually felt in the back coming around to the front.   I hope this information is somewhat helpful.  You are at such an exciting time in your life.  Enjoy the wonder and anticipation of meeting your little one.  Best wishes for a safe and memorable birth experience!
