Oh how exciting!....Yours is one of the age old mysteries..... But I'm sorry to tell you that even water breaking, for example, doesn't always happen before labor. With my first labor, my OB broke the bag of waters minutes before my daughter was born and after I had already been in labor for maybe 8 hours. But even for the next two labors, my water broke after labor had already started. There are a few things "they say" can be signs of an impending labor. They include: The baby "dropping" lower in your pelvis -- I personally remember this feeling, and the pressure in my pelvis in the few days preceding the start of labor. As you mention, the mucus plug, but for me, I lost my mucus plug actually AFTER labor had started. But for some folks it can come out even a few days before labor begins Water breaking -- That is usually an imminent sign that the baby will be here within a day! Things do tend to speed up rapidly after your water breaks, the babies head resting square on your cervix moves things along more rapidly A regular feeling of crampiness -- this is usually the actual onset of labor. I remember for all three of my labors being asleep at night and the feeling of crampiness happening. This, along with the pelvic pressure, were the first initial signs I had that full labor was imminent. I found this great chart at the University of Michigan website(it's hard for me as an Ohio State fan to admit something good about U of M, but even I can't deny them this one. There is also alot of other interesting labor information on that site: http://www.med.umich.edu/obgyn/smartmoms/labor/labor/beginning.htm Differences Between False Labor and True Labor Type of Change False Labor True Labor Timing of contractions. Often are irregular and do not consistently get closer together(called Braxton-Hicks contractions) Come at regular intervals and, as time goes on, get closer and closer together. Change with movement Contractions may stop when you walk or rest, or even may stop with a change of position. Contractions continue despite movement. Location of contractions Often felt in the abdomen Usually felt in the back coming around to the front. I hope this information is somewhat helpful. You are at such an exciting time in your life. Enjoy the wonder and anticipation of meeting your little one. Best wishes for a safe and memorable birth experience!
