Coaching Age

Postby jorian23 » Tue Jun 10, 2014 1:13 pm

Hello.  I have an awesome assistant who is 14 years old.  She assists in my recreational classes, and is with me all the time.  She is better then most of the adults I have tried, she is a gymnast herself, and wants to learn coaching.  As you know she can not be safety certified until she is 16.  Is this a possible liabilty issue due to her age?Does this vary by insurance companies?

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

I think you should be able to avoid lawsuits if you don't hire her officially.  I think child labor laws state, anyway, that she can't work legally at this point.  You might be able to pay her under the table.

As an employee, she would definitely be a liability at this point.  However, as a teacher's assistant, she would be in the clear.  Don't have her teach classes alone, your insurance wouldn't cover it if someone got an injury and she was teaching by herself.

Hope this helps!
