Did You Go To Your State's State Fair This Year? If So, Tell Me About It. Do You Go Every Year Or Was It Your First?

Postby Bellden » Sat Mar 01, 2014 6:36 pm

I live less than 2 miles from the fairgrounds, so every year I go twice, it runs for 12 days ending Labor Day every year, so it begins on a Thursday, I go the first Friday and the last day, Labor Day(Monday), every year. There are certain buildings and exhibits I visit every year and certain foods I eat every year...some times I partake in something new. I went today and I was just thinking that for all the places I go to all the time, there are so many places I never go because they don't interest me, or possibly because I haven't discovered them. I'm always impressed by my state fair, I've been on the fairgrounds for a few other state fairs and I have to say that mine seems to be quite impressive. I'm curious how other fairs stack up, what state do you live in, and what are your impressions of your fair, your favorite things to do there and just anything you can tell me and/or want to tell me aobut your fiar, I'd love to hear about it.

Your state fair sounds grand. Wish we had something similar. I live in NJ and the one time my husband and I went, it was a big disappointment.  It was dirty, expensive, crowded and tacky.  We wanted to take public transportation and the train stop was 1 and 1/2 miles from the fairground at the race track.  We had to walk thru a huge deserted parking lot to get there.  The animals on exibit looked very sad and forlorn.  I much prefer the local fairs and festivals that we have in south Jersey.  The Pumpkin Festival always has great music. The Cranberry Festival has great food and lots of vendors of antiques and crafts.  The Strawberry Festival has good food and fun events.  Lots of Seafood Festivals down this way.  Then there are the religious festivals in lots of surrounding towns, all with vendors and lots of rides and games and events.  There is the Wedding of the Sea Festival,  or the Hispanic Heritage Festival, too. We still llike to go to the big event that is taking place at Johanna Furnace, Pa. this weekend.  It?ll be our 17th year of going.  It?s the Hay Creek Valley Historical Society?s annual festival at the archeological dig just out- side of Reading, Pa.  Great fun! Lots of Colonial-era re-enactors doing period cooking, crafting, building etc. We do lots of  Xmas shopping at festivals, such unusual things you can find! Did You Go To Your State's State Fair This Year? If So, Tell Me About It. Do You Go Every Year Or Was It Your First?

I live in Ohio, but was visiting some Indianains about a month ago and they took us to their State fair. It was huge.  I had never been to a state fair before, just a county fair.  Of course they had lots of overpriced food.  Good, yet not good for you.  I got a $12 beef sandwich, pop, and quarter bag of chips.   We got a bloomin' onion and I think I had a corn dog.  That's about it for food. Not sure if all fairs do this type of thing but they have something new and exciting they fry every year.  This year was fried Pepsi.  I tried some of my friends.  I know what you're thinking, how do they fry liquid?  I think that's how they get peoples interest.  It's actually a Pepsi dough they make, then fry.  It was ok but not mouthwatering.  They do fried strawberries, fried Oreos, fried snickers, fried twix, fried PB Cups... The state fair grounds again was huge!  They had a whole ride area which we didn't visit.  There were lots of huge buildings with stalls with horses, ponies, donkeys.  I guess they had the worlds largest pig there too, although we didn't see it. The last thing we did that was pretty interesting was watch these buggy races.  This was hilarious.  There were 1 or 2 donkeys pulling these little rickidy carts which these big bulgy guys sat in.  It was a funny site to see.  Anyway they were pulled through cones and were timed. Most of this area of the fair had an unpleasant odor. All in all it was a good experience.

Did You Go To Your State's State Fair This Year? If So, Tell Me About It. Do You Go Every Year Or Was It Your First?

State Fair Well here on the North Shore of Massachusetts our State Fair is in October.  The Topsfield fair.  There is something there for everyone.   At the Topsfield Fair, kids love the rides,  there is a little kid section and the midway is a local hangout for the teens.  They also have those tents-woman with a 10 foot beard, smallest human, etc.   There are lots of 4H attractions, hundred of plants, animals, flowers, vegatables,(the have a pumpkin contest every year-for the biggest hugest pumpkin).   The have those hottubs right in the front of the wares section-always makes you want one.  Stands sell everything from the knives you see on TV next to the mop you see on TV to homemade leather goods.   They have pig shows, dog shows, horse shows, etc.  There is a stadium that features local bands at night and kids shows during the day.   They even do hotair balloon rides.   Food oh my the food.  My daughter loves the loaded baked potato.  My boyfriend the big turkey leg(I think it's a turkey leg) looks like a dianosaur leg to me.   I go for the Fried-dough.  Anna's fried dough.  Yummm.  My once a year treat.   They have lots of fun things to do just remember to bring lots of $$ !!!     We went to the Marshfield fair two years ago but didn't make it this year.  We went for the Demolition Durby.  The best things at that fair is supposed to be the lemonade from the famous lemonade stand-and we think the Demolition Durby.  We went on the finals night and they had about 3 hours of smash'm up. They do tractor pulls, lawn mower races, figure eight demolition, and motocross but the Demolition Derby is fun to watch.  You hear all the hoses break, radiators explode, last year a car was on the flat bed in the parking lot afterwards and then it caught on fire.  No one was hurt of course.   So that's it for us-looking forward to my fried dough.  I skipped it last year!  So I'm due.
