Do all ideas need Patenting?

Postby morcan » Mon Jul 30, 2012 8:03 pm

I have accidently come across a new way of moisturising (don't want to give too much away obviously), it is a type of product used for something else however I have mixed it with particular minerals that enables a pleasant alternative to keeping ourselves moistourised. I have personally made the product as well as designed the packaging. Do I need to get this patented or can I begin contacting stores to see whether they'd be interested in shelving my product? This is my first invention and thus lacking in knowledge in this field. Who do I speak to? I don't want to spend heaps of money in getting my product patented only to find out that it won't sell........

Surely you need to have it tested to be sure it's safe before selling it? Plus if it is using another product wouldn't you need to be making that from scratch or do a deal with a company?

I'd say it would be a good idea to protect your invention, but they may be other things to consider before that.
