Do corporate or tax attorneys need to get an MBA or MS?

Postby clem84 » Tue Dec 20, 2011 4:25 am

I'm getting my bachelor's in Accounting from a top undergraduate program with a minior in Economics. I've heard that the track is usually go to business school then go to law school, but do most tax or corporate lawyers go to business school at all?

You do not need to. Once you earn a JD and pass the bar exam you are licensed to practice any law in that jurisdiction (everything from tax to family, to criminal). Your undergrad major will be helpful to understanding these areas of law in law school so you should be in good shape. Also note that if you want your MBA as well many law schools (those that are affiliated or part of a larger university such as U of MI or U of TX) offer duel degree programs where you can earn your JD and MBA together, however this requires 4 years of study, versus only 3 to just get the JD, and you have to get accepted to each program (law school and MBA) separately. But as I said it is not a requirement to practice in those areas of law.

Best of luck.
